Jade plants (Crassula ovata) are popular succulents known for their thick, fleshy leaves and ease of care. Propagating jade plants is relatively simple and can be done through stem cuttings or leaf cuttings. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to propagate jade plants using both methods:

Choose a healthy stem from the jade plant that is mature and free from any signs of damage or disease.

Use sharp scissors or pruning shears to cut a section of the stem, ideally around 2-4 inches long.

Make the cut just below a node, which is where leaves attach to the stem.

Remove any leaves from the bottom of the cutting, leaving at least one or two leaves at the top.

If desired, dip the cut end of the stem in rooting hormone powder to encourage root growth.

Place the cutting in a warm, dry location out of direct sunlight.

Allow the cut end of the stem to callus over for a few days to prevent rotting when planted.

Fill a pot or container with well-draining potting mix.

Insert the callused end of the cutting into the soil, burying it about an inch deep.

Place the pot in a location with bright, indirect light.

Water the cutting lightly, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

Avoid overwatering, as jade plants are susceptible to root rot.

Over the next few weeks, roots should begin to develop from the node of the cutting.

Once the cutting has established roots and new growth is visible, you can transplant it into a larger pot if desired.

Choose a healthy, mature leaf from the jade plant. The leaf should be plump and free from any signs of damage or disease.

Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut a healthy leaf from the jade plant. Make the cut as close to the stem as possible.

Place the leaf cutting in a warm, dry location out of direct sunlight.

Allow the cut end of the leaf to callus over for a few days to prevent rotting when planted.

Fill a pot or container with well-draining potting mix.

Lay the callused end of the leaf cutting on top of the soil, pressing it gently into the surface.

Place the pot in a location with bright, indirect light.

Mist the leaf cutting lightly with water every few days to keep the soil slightly moist.

Roots should begin to develop from the base of the leaf cutting over the next few weeks.

Once roots have developed and new growth is visible, you can transplant the leaf cutting into a larger pot if desired.

Propagate jade plants during the spring or summer months when they are actively growing.

Choose pots with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging and root rot.

Avoid overwatering newly propagated jade plant cuttings, as this can lead to rotting.

Jade plants prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight.

By following these methods and tips, you can successfully propagate jade plants and grow your collection of these beautiful and resilient succulents.

[14
